Evidence supporting the use of: Peanut butter
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Peanut butter has been investigated in scientific studies for its potential role in supporting weight loss, though the evidence is modest. Peanut butter is high in protein and healthy fats, both of which can promote satiety and help control appetite, which may lead to reduced overall calorie intake. Some observational studies and small randomized controlled trials suggest that including nuts and nut butters in the diet does not necessarily contribute to weight gain and may, in certain contexts, support weight management due to their satiating properties. For example, a review in the journal Nutrients (2019) noted that regular nut consumption is not associated with increased body weight and may even help with weight loss or prevention of weight gain, largely due to increased satiety, incomplete fat absorption, and increased energy expenditure.
However, peanut butter is calorie-dense, and overconsumption can easily lead to a calorie surplus, which would counteract weight loss efforts. Any benefits are most likely to occur when peanut butter is consumed in moderation as part of a balanced, calorie-controlled diet. There is not robust, high-quality evidence specifically for peanut butter (as opposed to nuts in general) as a weight loss aid, and its effects are likely to be modest. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and limited evidence for its use in supporting weight loss, the strength of the evidence is not strong.
