Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Potassium hydroxycitrate is a mineral salt form of hydroxycitric acid (HCA), which is most commonly derived from the fruit rind of Garcinia cambogia. HCA-containing supplements have been widely marketed for weight loss, based on their proposed mechanism of inhibiting ATP-citrate lyase, an enzyme involved in fatty acid synthesis, which in theory could reduce fat accumulation and suppress appetite.

There is some scientific evidence supporting the use of HCA (including its potassium salt) for modest weight loss. Several randomized, placebo-controlled trials have explored its efficacy, with mixed results. Some studies show statistically significant, but clinically modest, reductions in body weight (typically 1-2 kg over 2-12 weeks) compared to placebo. Meta-analyses (e.g., Onakpoya et al., 2011, J Obes) conclude that HCA may lead to short-term weight loss, but the effect size is small and the clinical relevance is questionable. Variability in results may be due to differences in study design, dosage, and participant characteristics.

There is no robust evidence for significant or sustained weight loss, and safety profiles are generally acceptable, though some gastrointestinal side effects have been reported. Overall, the scientific community considers the evidence inconclusive and insufficient to recommend potassium hydroxycitrate as a primary strategy for weight loss.
