Evidence supporting the use of: Potato Protein
For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Potato protein has recently attracted scientific interest as a plant-based protein source with potential applications in weight management. Several small-scale human and animal studies suggest that potato protein may help with weight loss and body composition, primarily due to its high satiety effect and favorable amino acid profile. Potato protein is considered a "complete" protein, containing all essential amino acids, and has a high biological value, which may promote muscle protein synthesis and help preserve lean mass during calorie restriction.
Some studies have observed that consuming potato protein can increase the release of satiety hormones (such as cholecystokinin and GLP-1), leading to reduced appetite and lower subsequent food intake. However, most available research involves short-term interventions or uses potato protein in combination with other dietary changes, making it difficult to isolate its effects. Evidence directly comparing potato protein to other protein sources (like whey or soy) for weight loss is limited and mixed.
There is not yet robust, long-term clinical evidence that potato protein supplementation alone leads to significant or sustained weight loss. The current scientific support is preliminary and mainly based on its potential to reduce appetite and preserve muscle during weight loss efforts. Therefore, while the use of potato protein for weight loss has some scientific rationale, the evidence is still emerging and not yet strong.
