For the health condition: Weight Loss
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Propolmannan, also known as Amorphophallus konjac or glucomannan, is a soluble dietary fiber derived from the root of the konjac plant. There is some scientific evidence supporting its use in weight loss. The mechanism involves its ability to absorb water and expand in the stomach, leading to increased feelings of fullness and reduced calorie intake. Several randomized controlled trials have explored its efficacy. For example, a 2013 systematic review and meta-analysis published in Obesity concluded that glucomannan supplementation led to modest weight loss in overweight and obese individuals, though the effect size was small and some studies showed no significant difference compared to placebo. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved health claims for glucomannan regarding weight loss, contingent upon its use in the context of an energy-restricted diet. However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate at best, with some inconsistencies in trial results and questions about clinical relevance. Common side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort, and rare cases of esophageal obstruction have been reported if not taken with sufficient water. In summary, while there is some scientific validation for the use of propolmannan for weight loss, the supporting evidence is moderate and the actual benefit may be limited.
