Rating (out of 5): 3

Somatropin is a synthetic form of human growth hormone (hGH) and has been studied for its potential effects on body composition, including weight loss, primarily in individuals with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) or certain clinical populations such as HIV-associated wasting. Scientific evidence indicates that somatropin can reduce fat mass and increase lean body mass in these groups. This effect is believed to be due to the hormone's ability to stimulate lipolysis (the breakdown of fat), inhibit lipogenesis (the formation of fat), and increase protein synthesis. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have shown that somatropin therapy can lead to modest reductions in body fat and increases in muscle mass in GHD adults and specific patient populations.

However, the use of somatropin for weight loss in healthy, non-deficient individuals is not supported by robust scientific evidence. The effects on actual weight loss (as opposed to body composition) are generally modest, and the therapy is associated with significant risks, including edema, joint pain, insulin resistance, and potential long-term adverse effects. Regulatory bodies such as the FDA do not approve somatropin for general weight loss or obesity management outside of specific indications. In summary, while there is scientific evidence for its impact on body composition in certain medical contexts, using somatropin for weight loss in the general population lacks strong supporting data and is not recommended.
