Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Historically, animal lung tissue—most notably from pigs or cows—has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other folk medicine systems to treat respiratory ailments such as wheezing, cough, and asthma-like symptoms. In TCM, the principle of "like cures like" (organotherapy) is sometimes invoked, suggesting that consuming lung tissue can help strengthen and heal the human lung. Formulas such as "Fei Pian" (Lung Tablets) and various decoctions containing dried lung have been prescribed by practitioners for centuries to support respiratory health. However, scientific validation for these uses is limited. Some proponents claim that lung tissue may contain peptides or micronutrients beneficial to lung function, but there is little to no modern clinical research or controlled trials to substantiate these claims. Most evidence remains anecdotal or based on traditional use rather than empirical data. Therefore, while the use of animal lung for treating wheezing is rooted in tradition and historical practice, there is a lack of robust scientific evidence to support its efficacy for this specific indication.
