Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cambodian cardamom (Amomum kravanh) has a long-standing place in traditional medicine systems, especially those of Southeast Asia. In these traditions, cardamom is often valued for its aromatic, warming, and digestive properties. Its use to support or treat "worry" (a modern term for what might be described as anxiety, restlessness, or nervousness) is rooted in the belief that aromatic herbs can calm the mind and balance bodily energies. However, there is little direct scientific research linking Cambodian cardamom specifically to anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) or anti-worry effects. Most of the traditional support comes from broader use of cardamom in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese medicine, where it is sometimes used in formulations intended to soothe the mind or relieve mild gastrointestinal discomforts that may be associated with emotional distress.

Despite these traditional uses, modern scientific studies on Cambodian cardamom's efficacy for anxiety or worry are lacking. Some studies on related cardamom species (such as Elettaria cardamomum) have noted mild anxiolytic effects in animals, possibly due to essential oil constituents, but these results cannot be directly extrapolated to Cambodian cardamom or to humans. Thus, while its calming reputation persists in folk and herbal traditions, robust scientific validation is not available at this time, and the evidence should be considered weak.
