Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Gelsemium, derived from the plant Gelsemium sempervirens (commonly known as yellow jasmine), has a long history of use in traditional and homeopathic medicine for managing symptoms related to anxiety and worry. Historically, it was employed in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a remedy for anxiety, nervousness, and even stage fright. Homeopathic practitioners continue to recommend highly diluted Gelsemium preparations for emotional states such as anticipatory anxiety, apprehension, and trembling associated with worry or fear. However, these uses are based primarily on empirical tradition and the principles of homeopathy, rather than on rigorous scientific research. Modern clinical evidence supporting the efficacy of Gelsemium for worry or anxiety is limited and inconclusive. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest neuroactive properties, but there are no large, high-quality randomized controlled trials validating its use for anxiety or worry in humans. As a result, its use in this context is considered to be supported more by tradition than by robust scientific evidence.
