Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Siberian Ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticosus), also known as eleuthero, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese and Russian herbal medicine as an "adaptogen." Adaptogens are thought to help the body resist physical, environmental, and emotional stressors. In traditional practices, Siberian Ginseng has been used to support general well-being, stamina, and resilience to stress, which may indirectly relate to the concept of "worry" or anxiety. However, the use of Siberian Ginseng specifically for treating or reducing worry (anxiety) is not robustly documented in either traditional texts or modern clinical studies.

Scientific evidence for Siberian Ginseng’s efficacy in treating anxiety or worry is extremely limited. A few small studies have explored its effects on mental performance and stress, but these do not directly measure worry or anxiety symptoms, and results are inconclusive. Major reviews and clinical guidelines do not recommend Siberian Ginseng for anxiety disorders or worry due to insufficient evidence. Most of the rationale for its use in this context remains rooted in traditional beliefs about adaptogens rather than rigorous scientific validation. Therefore, while Siberian Ginseng is used traditionally for general stress and well-being, strong evidence or clear historical use specifically for "worry" is lacking.
