Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Linden (Tilia spp.), also known as lime flower, has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine for supporting relaxation and easing symptoms of worry, anxiety, and mild stress. Traditionally, linden flowers have been prepared as teas or infusions to induce calmness, reduce nervous tension, and promote sleep. This use is mentioned in historic herbal texts and folk medicine, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe.

However, scientific validation for linden's anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects is limited. While some laboratory studies suggest mild sedative properties, possibly due to constituents like flavonoids, volatile oils, and mucilaginous compounds, there are very few rigorous clinical trials in humans. Most of the available evidence comes from traditional use and observational reports rather than controlled clinical studies. As such, the evidence for linden's use in relieving "worry" (anxiety) is largely traditional, with some suggestive but inconclusive scientific support.

In summary, linden is primarily used for worry because of its long-standing role in traditional herbal medicine, and the scientific evidence supporting its effectiveness is limited and not definitive.
