Rating (out of 5): 2

Picamilon is a compound formed by combining niacin (vitamin B3) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). It was originally developed in Russia in the 1960s to enhance GABA’s ability to cross the blood-brain barrier. There is limited scientific evidence supporting its use for the treatment of "worry" (anxiety). Several small Russian clinical studies and preclinical reports suggest that Picamilon may have anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) effects, likely due to increased GABAergic activity in the brain. These studies typically reported improvements in symptoms of anxiety and worry compared to placebo or standard treatments. However, these findings have not been widely replicated or validated in larger, high-quality, peer-reviewed clinical trials outside of Russia.

Western medical literature on Picamilon is sparse, and the compound is not approved for medical use in the United States or Europe. Regulatory bodies such as the FDA have raised concerns about its safety and efficacy, and it is not legally sold as a dietary supplement in some countries. The overall quality of evidence is low, and methodological limitations in existing studies make it difficult to draw firm conclusions. In summary, while there is some scientific basis for Picamilon's use in supporting worry or anxiety, the supporting evidence is limited and not robust by current clinical research standards.
