Evidence supporting the use of: Schizandrol A
For the health condition: Worry
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Schizandrol A is a bioactive compound isolated from the fruit of Schisandra chinensis, a plant used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Historically, Schisandra has been employed for its purported adaptogenic properties—meaning it is believed to help the body adapt to stress and support mental function. In TCM, Schisandra is classified as a tonic herb, said to "calm the spirit" and "nourish the heart," which can be interpreted as addressing symptoms akin to worry or mild anxiety.
However, direct scientific evidence specifically supporting Schizandrol A for the treatment or support of "worry" (a modern term closely related to anxiety) is limited. Most research has focused on the general adaptogenic and neuroprotective effects of Schisandra extracts, not the isolated compound, and often in animal or in vitro models. While some studies suggest potential anxiolytic and anti-stress effects of Schisandra extracts, these effects have not been robustly demonstrated in human clinical trials, nor has Schizandrol A itself been conclusively shown to alleviate worry in humans.
Therefore, the use of Schizandrol A to support or treat worry is primarily justified by traditional usage, with a low level of scientific evidence specifically supporting this claim.
