Evidence supporting the use of: Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM)
For the health condition: Wounds and Sores
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1
Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a sulfur-containing compound often marketed as a dietary supplement for various health concerns, including joint health, inflammation, and skin conditions. Regarding its use for supporting or treating wounds and sores, there is limited scientific evidence available. Some small-scale laboratory and animal studies suggest that MSM may possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which in theory could facilitate wound healing by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation at the site of injury. For example, in vitro studies have shown that MSM can modulate cytokine production and reduce inflammatory markers. Animal studies have noted some improvement in wound closure and reduction in inflammatory cell infiltration when MSM was applied topically or administered orally. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically investigating MSM’s effects on wound healing or the treatment of sores are lacking. The available research is preliminary, often involving small sample sizes or animal models, and generally does not meet the standards necessary to establish efficacy for wound care in clinical practice. MSM is not a standard or widely recommended treatment for wounds or sores by medical authorities. Therefore, while there is some emerging scientific rationale and preliminary data, the overall quality and quantity of evidence supporting MSM’s use for this condition is very low.
