Evidence supporting the use of: Centella triterpenes
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Centella triterpenes, primarily asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid, are active compounds derived from Centella asiatica (Gotu kola). There is moderate scientific evidence supporting their use in the prevention and treatment of wrinkles and other signs of skin aging. Several in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that Centella triterpenes can stimulate collagen synthesis and promote fibroblast proliferation, which are key processes in maintaining skin elasticity and reducing wrinkle formation. For example, research has shown that topical application of Centella extracts or isolated triterpenes increases type I collagen production and inhibits the expression of matrix metalloproteinases, enzymes that degrade collagen in the skin.
Clinical studies, though limited in scale and number, report improvements in skin hydration, elasticity, and reduction in wrinkle depth following topical use of Centella-based formulations. These results are often attributed to enhanced extracellular matrix production and improved antioxidant defenses against photoaging. However, large-scale, long-term randomized controlled trials are still lacking, and most available data come from small trials or studies using cosmetic formulations with multiple ingredients, making it difficult to isolate the effects of Centella triterpenes alone.
Overall, while there is a scientific basis for the use of Centella triterpenes in wrinkle treatment, the strength of evidence is moderate, and more robust clinical research is needed for definitive conclusions.
