Evidence supporting the use of: Cycloastragenol
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Cycloastragenol is a compound derived from the Astragalus membranaceus plant, traditionally used in Chinese medicine. Its recent use for wrinkle reduction and skin aging is mainly based on its purported activity as a telomerase activator. Scientific interest grew after studies suggested cycloastragenol could activate telomerase, an enzyme that extends telomeres, thereby potentially delaying cellular aging. Some in vitro and animal studies have shown that cycloastragenol can extend the lifespan of cultured human cells and promote DNA repair, which theoretically could help reduce signs of skin aging such as wrinkles.
However, direct clinical evidence in humans is limited. A few small-scale studies and anecdotal reports suggest possible improvements in skin elasticity and appearance, but these results are preliminary, have not been widely replicated, and often lack rigorous controls. No large, peer-reviewed clinical trials specifically evaluating cycloastragenol's efficacy for wrinkle reduction have been published as of 2024. Safety data are also limited.
In summary, while laboratory and early-stage research offers a plausible biological mechanism for cycloastragenol in wrinkle reduction, robust scientific validation in humans is lacking. The evidence base is currently weak (rated 2/5), and further well-designed clinical studies are needed to substantiate claims about its anti-wrinkle effects.
