Evidence supporting the use of: Glabridin
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Glabridin is a flavonoid found in licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra) and is commonly used in skincare products for its purported skin-brightening and anti-aging properties. Scientific interest in glabridin for wrinkle reduction arises from its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, which are believed to help mitigate some of the mechanisms involved in skin aging, such as oxidative stress and collagen breakdown. Several in vitro studies have shown that glabridin can inhibit melanin synthesis and protect against UVB-induced skin damage. Some animal studies have also demonstrated that glabridin may suppress matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes that degrade collagen and elastin, thereby potentially slowing wrinkle formation.
However, the direct evidence supporting glabridin's efficacy in reducing wrinkles in humans is limited. Most available research has been conducted on cell cultures or animal models, and clinical trials in humans are scarce. While glabridin exhibits properties that are theoretically beneficial for skin aging, such as antioxidative and anti-inflammatory actions, robust clinical data demonstrating a significant effect on wrinkle reduction are lacking. Therefore, its use for wrinkles is scientifically plausible but not yet strongly validated by human studies. The overall evidence level is moderate to low, reflecting a need for more comprehensive clinical research.
