Evidence supporting the use of: Mulberroside A
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Mulberroside A, a bioactive compound found in the root bark of Morus alba (white mulberry), has recently garnered scientific interest for its potential anti-wrinkle and skin-aging benefits. Several in vitro and animal studies have investigated its effects on skin health. The most notable findings suggest that Mulberroside A exhibits antioxidant properties, which can help neutralize free radicals that contribute to skin aging and wrinkle formation. Additionally, some research indicates that it may inhibit matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), enzymes responsible for the degradation of collagen and elastin in the skin, thus potentially preserving skin structure and elasticity.
For example, a study published in Journal of Ethnopharmacology (2012) demonstrated that topical application of Mulberroside A in a mouse model reduced UVB-induced wrinkle formation, likely due to its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions. However, these findings are largely preclinical, with limited human data available to date. While the mechanistic rationale is promising, and the ingredient is starting to appear in cosmetic formulations aimed at anti-aging, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, the scientific evidence remains preliminary, justifying a moderate rating.
