Evidence supporting the use of: Phytoene
For the health condition: Wrinkles
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Phytoene is a colorless carotenoid found in various fruits and vegetables and is present in some skincare formulations. Its use for supporting or treating wrinkles draws upon its antioxidant properties, which are thought to help counteract oxidative stress—a key factor in skin aging. Scientific studies, while limited, have investigated phytoene and its related compound, phytofluene, for skin health. In vitro studies show that phytoene can absorb UV light and neutralize reactive oxygen species, potentially reducing some of the cellular mechanisms behind wrinkle formation. Some small-scale clinical studies and pilot trials of topical formulations containing phytoene (often in combination with other carotenoids) have reported improvements in skin smoothness, elasticity, and reduction in wrinkle depth. However, these studies are generally of low methodological quality, with small sample sizes and sometimes lacking appropriate controls.
There is currently insufficient high-quality, large-scale clinical evidence to conclusively validate phytoene as a treatment for wrinkles. Most available data suggest a possible benefit as an adjunct ingredient in antioxidant-rich skincare, but not as a standalone anti-wrinkle solution. As such, the evidence supporting its use for wrinkles can be rated as modest (2/5), reflecting preliminary scientific support that warrants further investigation.
