Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide, thereby protecting cells from oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is a key contributor to skin aging and wrinkle formation due to its damaging effects on cellular structures, including collagen and elastin fibers in the skin. Scientific interest in SOD supplementation or topical application has grown due to these antioxidative properties.

A handful of small clinical trials and animal studies suggest that SOD, when administered orally (often as a melon extract with SOD activity) or topically, may provide some benefit in reducing signs of skin aging, including wrinkles. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial published in 2017 demonstrated that oral SOD supplementation improved skin hydration and reduced wrinkle depth in women after 56 days. Similarly, another study reported that topical application of SOD-containing formulations could protect against UV-induced skin damage in animal models.

However, the current body of evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variable formulations. The bioavailability of SOD (especially when taken orally) is also debated, as the enzyme may be degraded in the digestive tract unless specially formulated. While there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence supporting SOD's use for wrinkles, larger and more rigorous human studies are needed to definitively establish efficacy.
