Essential Mineral

Understanding the Benefits of Zinc

Zinc is one of 16 essential trace minerals your body needs for optimal health. Next to iron, it is the most abundant mineral in your body and is found in almost every cell. Zinc is central to the proper functioning of more than 300 enzymes and is essential for proper growth and development.

The benefits of Zinc extend across virtually every system in your body. Zinc is incorporated into about 10% of all human proteins and participates in all metabolic processes — from protein and carbohydrate metabolism to DNA synthesis and immune regulation. Despite its critical importance, the body cannot synthesize Zinc on its own, making adequate dietary or supplemental intake essential.

Low levels of Zinc have been detected in people with a number of conditions including diabetes, eating disorders, male infertility, diarrhea, and osteoporosis. Dietary Zinc deficiency is quite common in the developing world, affecting an estimated 2 billion people, and even in North America, 35%–45% of adults aged 60 years or older have Zinc intakes below the estimated average requirement.

How It Works

How Zinc Supports Your Body

Zinc's biological activity stems from the chemical properties of the Zn²⁺ ion, which participates in enzymatic catalysis, structural protein integrity, and gene expression regulation. Zinc metalloenzymes are found in all six enzyme classes — oxidoreductases, transferases, hydrolases, lyases, isomerases, and ligases — meaning Zinc is involved in every category of metabolic reaction in the body.

Immune System Support

For more than 50 years, research has established that Zinc deficiency compromises immune function. Virtually all aspects of innate and adaptive immunity are affected by Zinc, including the number and function of neutrophils, monocytes, natural killer cells, T cells, and B cells. People who are deficient in Zinc are more susceptible to infections, and Zinc supplementation may help improve immune system function, supporting protection against colds and upper respiratory illnesses.

Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Activity

Zn²⁺ can reduce the production of inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and interleukin (IL)-1beta, resulting in anti-inflammatory function. Studies have also shown that Zinc supplementation may help protect mononuclear cells against oxidative stress, representing one mechanism by which Zinc may function as an antioxidant in humans.

Hormonal and Reproductive Function

There are numerous physiologically relevant interactions between Zinc and various hormones, including testosterone, insulin, and growth hormone, where production, storage, secretion, and hormone receptor interactions can all be involved. The hormone testosterone requires Zinc for its production, and Zinc is highly concentrated in seminal plasma, making it essential for the normal functioning of the male reproductive system.

DNA Synthesis and Structural Integrity

Zinc contributes to chromatin structure, stabilizes the DNA double helix, and forms "Zinc fingers" — protein sequences that enable transcription factors to bind to DNA and regulate gene expression. The body also uses Zinc to make DNA and proteins, underscoring its fundamental role in cellular health.

Key ingredients

Zinc (as mono-methionine) — 20 mg
This product uses OptiZinc®, the only high-potency Zinc supplement FDA-approved safe for human nutrition. OptiZinc® is a patented 1:1 complex of Zinc and 100% natural methionine, the amino acid that is best absorbed by the body, and serves as an antioxidant. Studies show that OptiZinc® is absorbed better, retained longer, and is more effective than ordinary Zinc supplements tested. It also resists binding with dietary fiber and phytate — organic compounds that inhibit Zinc absorption. Unlike other Zinc supplements, OptiZinc® will not cause anemia by removing iron from cells. Zinc supports a wide range of body systems backed by scientific research: <ul><li><strong>Immune system:</strong> Research confirms that Zinc is essential for both innate and adaptive immune function. Multiple RCTs and meta-analyses show that Zinc supplementation modulates immune biomarkers and, in certain formulations and doses, may reduce the duration of upper respiratory infections by approximately 33% when initiated within 24 hours of symptom onset.</li><li><strong>Prostate health:</strong> The healthy prostate accumulates the highest concentration of Zinc of any soft tissue in the body. Studies show that BPH and prostate cancer tissue have significantly lower Zinc levels than normal tissue. Zinc regulates Zinc transporters (ZIP1), supports apoptosis in prostate cells, and a 2019 nutraceutical review cites Zinc as capable of producing similar benefits to lycopene on BPH symptoms.</li><li><strong>Male fertility and reproductive health:</strong> Zinc is the most extensively studied micronutrient for male fertility. Seminal Zinc levels are significantly lower in infertile men, and a meta-analysis in Scientific Reports found Zinc supplementation significantly improved semen volume, sperm motility, and normal morphology in infertile males. It plays direct roles in spermatogenesis, sperm chromatin stability, capacitation, and testosterone balance.</li><li><strong>Testosterone support:</strong> Zinc deficiency is consistently linked to reduced testosterone levels, and supplementation in Zinc-deficient individuals has been shown to restore testosterone to normal levels. Zinc plays essential roles in LH receptor function and testosterone biosynthesis in Leydig cells.</li><li><strong>Upper respiratory health:</strong> A 2015 meta-analysis confirmed that Zinc lozenges significantly reduce nasal discharge (34%), nasal congestion (37%), cough (46%), and hoarseness (43%). The NCCIH recognizes Zinc as an effective treatment for cold symptoms in adults.</li><li><strong>Post-illness recovery:</strong> Meta-analyses show Zinc may shorten the duration of common cold symptoms by approximately 33% when taken within 24 hours of symptom onset. It is a core nutrient for post-illness immune restoration.</li><li><strong>Wound healing:</strong> Zinc is a modulator of the wound-repair process with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research suggests that people with wounds who also have low Zinc levels may benefit from supplementation.</li><li><strong>Seasonal respiratory health:</strong> Zinc has immunomodulatory properties with evidence suggesting it may reduce allergic responses through p38 MAPK pathway modulation.</li></ul>
Dicalcium phosphate
Dicalcium phosphate is a Calcium compound used as a tableting agent in this formulation. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, with more than 99% stored in bone as hydroxyapatite. Calcium plays essential roles in cell signaling, muscle contraction, neuronal transmission, and hormone secretion. It is widely involved in physiological cell functions as both a direct signal transducer and a second messenger. Calcium is also required for the structural integrity of the skeletal system and participates in the mineralization of bones and teeth.

Who Should Consider Zinc

Who Benefits Most from Zinc Supplementation

While Zinc is important for everyone, certain groups may especially benefit from supplementation. Men seeking to support prostate health, testosterone levels, or fertility may find Zinc particularly relevant, since Zinc is essential for testosterone biosynthesis, spermatogenesis, and maintaining healthy prostate tissue.

Individuals looking to support their immune system may also benefit, as research shows Zinc plays a central role in both innate and adaptive immunity. Zinc supplementation has been studied extensively for its role in supporting recovery from colds, upper respiratory challenges, and seasonal respiratory concerns.

Certain populations may be at greater risk for Zinc deficiency, including people who have had gastrointestinal surgery (such as weight loss surgery), those with digestive disorders like ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, vegetarians (whose plant-based diets may contain phytate that reduces Zinc absorption by up to 50%), older adults, and individuals with sickle cell disease.

This product is gluten free, dairy free, soy free, and grain free, making it suitable for individuals with common dietary sensitivities.

Directions

How to Take Zinc

Take one (1) tablet daily with meals. Store in a cool, dry place and away from direct light.

Each tablet contains 20 mg of OptiZinc®. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for Zinc is 8 mg/day for women and 11 mg/day for men. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults is 40 mg/day.

For optimal absorption, be aware that taking supplements containing a substantial amount of iron (25 mg or more) at the same time as Zinc supplements can reduce Zinc absorption. If you take iron supplements, consider separating them from your Zinc intake.

Zinc may interact with certain medications, including quinolone antibiotics (such as Cipro), tetracycline antibiotics, and penicillamine. To help avoid interactions with antibiotics, take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, taking a Zinc supplement. For penicillamine, take Zinc supplements and penicillamine at least 1 hour apart.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What makes OptiZinc® different from other Zinc supplements?

OptiZinc® is the only high-potency Zinc supplement FDA-approved safe for human nutrition. It is a patented 1:1 complex of Zinc and 100% natural methionine — the amino acid best absorbed by the body — and serves as an antioxidant. Studies show that OptiZinc® is absorbed better, retained longer, and is more effective than ordinary Zinc supplements tested. It resists binding with dietary fiber and phytate (organic compounds that inhibit Zinc absorption), and unlike other Zinc supplements, OptiZinc® will not cause anemia by removing iron from cells.

How does Zinc support immune function?

Zinc is essential for virtually all aspects of innate and adaptive immunity. Deficiency impairs the development and activity of neutrophils, natural killer cells, T cells, and B cells, and raises inflammatory cytokine levels. Multiple RCTs and meta-analyses confirm that Zinc supplementation modulates immune biomarkers and, in certain formulations and doses, may reduce the duration of upper respiratory infections. Research has shown that Zinc lozenges delivering adequate elemental Zinc may shorten common cold duration by approximately 33% when initiated within 24 hours of symptom onset.

Can Zinc support prostate health and urinary flow?

The healthy prostate accumulates the highest Zinc concentration of any soft tissue in the body, and Zinc levels are markedly reduced in BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) and prostate cancer tissues. Research suggests that Zinc regulates 5α-reductase activity and promotes apoptosis of prostate epithelial cells. A 2019 BPH nutraceutical review cites Zinc as a key micronutrient that may support prostate health. Symptoms resulting from an enlarged prostate may be relieved with additional Zinc.

Does Zinc support male fertility and testosterone?

Zinc is the most extensively studied micronutrient for male fertility. It plays direct roles in spermatogenesis, sperm chromatin stability, and testosterone biosynthesis in Leydig cells. A meta-analysis found that Zinc supplementation significantly improved semen volume, sperm motility, and normal morphology in infertile males. Zinc deficiency is consistently linked to reduced testosterone levels, and supplementation in Zinc-deficient men has been shown to help restore testosterone to normal levels.

Who is at risk for Zinc deficiency?

Certain populations may be at greater risk, including people who have had gastrointestinal surgery (such as weight loss surgery), those with digestive disorders like Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, vegetarians (whose diets high in phytate may reduce Zinc absorption by up to 50%), alcoholics, people with sickle cell disease, and older adults. Studies show that 35%–45% of adults aged 60 and older have Zinc intakes below the estimated average requirement.

Can I take Zinc with other supplements or medications?

Taking iron supplements of 25 mg or more at the same time as Zinc can reduce Zinc absorption, so it is best to separate them. Zinc may also interact with quinolone antibiotics, tetracycline antibiotics, and penicillamine — take antibiotics at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after Zinc, and separate penicillamine by at least 1 hour. Zinc supplementation can be combined with vitamins A, C, and E for enhanced immune support, and because OptiZinc® is complexed with methionine, it is designed for superior absorption compared to other Zinc forms.
