What Studies Say About Zinc and Cold Duration
Multiple meta-analyses have examined the evidence around Zinc and the common cold. In seven randomized controlled trials, Zinc acetate and Zinc gluconate lozenges containing more than 75 mg/day of elemental Zinc shortened common cold duration on average by 33% (95% CI: 21%–45%). Both the NCCIH and the AAFP recognize Zinc as an effective treatment for cold symptoms in adults.
A Cochrane review of 34 randomized trials involving 8,526 patients reported that while Zinc has little to no benefit in cold prevention, it may have a meaningful benefit in treatment. A separate meta-analysis of 28 trials (5,446 participants) found that symptoms resolved approximately 2 days earlier compared to placebo, and more subjects were likely to remain symptomatic after 7 days without Zinc.
A 2015 meta-analysis of three RCTs using 80–92 mg/day of Zinc acetate lozenges demonstrated significant reductions across specific cold symptoms: nasal discharge was reduced by 34%, nasal congestion by 37%, cough by 46%, and hoarseness by 43%.
Research has found no difference in efficacy between Zinc acetate and Zinc gluconate lozenges for treating colds, and no evidence that daily doses higher than 100 mg provide greater benefit. The benefits appear to be dose- and formulation-dependent, with lozenges delivering more than 75 mg/day of elemental Zinc initiated within 24 hours of symptom onset showing the strongest results.
How Zinc Supports Your Immune System Against Colds

Additionally, Zinc supports antiviral defense by enhancing interferon signaling against RNA viruses and inhibiting viral RNA-dependent RNA polymerase activity. The benefit of Zinc lozenges for colds appears to derive specifically from dissolving the lozenge in the mouth rather than swallowing it, suggesting Zinc exerts local effects in the oropharyngeal region in addition to its systemic immune support.

Who Should Consider Zinc for Colds and Immune Support
