Both quinolone antibiotics (such as Cipro) and tetracycline antibiotics might reduce the amount of both Zinc and the antibiotic that your body absorbs — take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, taking a Zinc supplement. Penicillamine (used for rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson disease) should be taken at least 1 hour apart from Zinc supplements. Taking iron supplements containing 25 mg or more at the same time as Zinc can also reduce Zinc absorption.

The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for Zinc in adults is 40 mg per day. Long-term consumption above this level can result in copper deficiency. Getting excessive amounts of Zinc may cause nausea, dizziness, headaches, or gastric distress.
