Usage Guidelines

How to Take Zinc Lozenges

Take one (1) tablet daily with meals. Store in a cool, dry place and away from direct light.

Each tablet contains 20 mg of OptiZinc®. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for Zinc is 8 mg/day for women and 11 mg/day for men. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults is 40 mg/day.

Zinc may interact with certain medications, including quinolone antibiotics (such as Cipro), tetracycline antibiotics, and penicillamine. To help avoid interactions with antibiotics, take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, taking a Zinc supplement. For penicillamine, take Zinc supplements and penicillamine at least 1 hour apart. Taking supplements that contain a substantial amount of iron (≥25 mg) at the same time as Zinc supplements may also reduce Zinc absorption.

Getting excessive amounts of Zinc (above the 40 mg/day upper limit over extended periods) may cause nausea, headaches, or gastric distress, and can inhibit copper absorption. Zinc may interact with quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics — take these at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after Zinc. Penicillamine should be taken at least 1 hour apart from Zinc. Iron supplements (≥25 mg) taken at the same time may reduce Zinc absorption. Importantly, intranasal Zinc products have been associated with loss of smell, but these safety concerns have not been found to be associated with cold lozenges containing Zinc.
