Vaginal Balance

Vaginal Balance is a two-capsule daily oral probiotic supplement providing 5.5 billion CFU of five Lactobacillus strains alongside 500 mg of cranberry powder (Vaccinium macrocarpon). It is intended for women 18 and older who want to support vaginal microbiome balance, healthy vaginal pH, urinary tract health, and digestive and immune function — what Microbiome Labs describes as 4-in-1 support. The formula is designed for daily ongoing use, with clinical research suggesting that meaningful shifts in vaginal microbiome composition are typically observed between four and eight weeks of consistent supplementation.

The five Lactobacillus strains in this formula were selected specifically for their relevance to the vaginal microbiome rather than the gut. Four of them — L. crispatus LBV 88™, L. rhamnosus LBV 96™, L. gasseri LBV 150N™, and L. jensenii LBV 116™ — are grouped under the ASTARTE™ trademark from Chr. Hansen, a designation indicating they were clinically developed for vaginal microbiome applications. These four strains represent the dominant Lactobacillus species found in the healthy vaginal microbiome of reproductive-age women and were selected based on their ability to colonize the vaginal environment, lower vaginal pH through lactic acid production, and competitively exclude pathogenic organisms. The fifth strain, LA-5® L. acidophilus, is one of the most extensively researched Lactobacillus strains in the clinical literature and contributes additional support for both gut and vaginal microbiome balance. The cranberry powder component provides proanthocyanidins — the compounds responsible for cranberry's well-studied anti-adhesion effect in the urinary tract.

The clinical rationale for the probiotic component is grounded in the relationship between vaginal Lactobacillus dominance and vaginal health outcomes. A healthy vaginal microbiome is characterized by high concentrations of Lactobacillus species, which maintain vaginal pH between approximately 3.8 and 4.5 through lactic acid production. This acidic environment inhibits the growth of anaerobic bacteria associated with bacterial vaginosis, opportunistic yeast populations, and sexually transmitted pathogens. When Lactobacillus populations decline — due to hormonal changes, antibiotic use, sexual activity, or other environmental factors — vaginal pH rises, creating conditions favorable to dysbiotic overgrowth and associated discomfort. Oral supplementation with vaginal-sourced Lactobacillus strains has been shown in multiple published clinical trials to increase Lactobacillus abundance, reduce opportunistic microorganisms, and improve bacteria-related vaginal discomfort. The cranberry powder addition addresses the urinary tract through a complementary mechanism: proanthocyanidins inhibit bacterial adhesion to urinary tract epithelial cells, which is the initial step in urinary tract infection pathogenesis, supporting the FDA-qualified health claim language regarding recurrent UTI risk reduction in healthy women.
