Research suggests the mechanism of inhibition works through crystallization and co-precipitation. Ingestion of 1 g of Beta Sitosterol was shown to reduce absorption of cholesterol by 42% in a meal containing 500 mg of cholesterol. The decrease in plasma cholesterol is likely due to an increase in LDL receptor activity, though a compensatory increase in cholesterol synthesis partially offsets this effect.

The Science Behind Beta Sitosterol and Heart Health
The LDL-cholesterol-lowering effect of plant sterol supplementation, of which Beta Sitosterol is the primary component, has been confirmed in multiple meta-analyses encompassing a large body of randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials. This evidence is considered strong.

A recent meta-analysis of 13 randomized clinical trials concluded that supplementation of plant sterols can reduce LDL-C by an average of 12.14 mg/dL, with greater improvements for doses of 2 g/day and in individuals with baseline LDL-C above 140 mg/dL.
The U.S. FDA authorizes an official health claim linking plant sterol ester consumption to reduced coronary heart disease risk when consumed as part of a low-fat diet. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) also endorses a health claim for plant sterols, including Beta Sitosterol, for LDL reduction. Research has also indicated that Beta Sitosterol has positive effects on triglyceride levels, and dietary supplementation has been shown to affect both the absorption of dietary cholesterol and systemic levels of cholesterol and triglycerides, helping to normalize both.
