Cortisol Manager by Integrative Therapeutics | Guide

Comprehensive guide to Cortisol Manager by Integrative Therapeutics — its stress-balancing ingredients, how it works, who it's for, and how to take it.

Overview

What Is Cortisol Manager by Integrative Therapeutics?

Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal cortex and released in response to stress. Fluctuations in cortisol levels can indicate how effectively the body is handling stress. Cortisol Manager by Integrative Therapeutics is a supplement formulated with a proprietary blend of stress-reducing ingredients — including Sensoril® Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), L-theanine, Magnolia bark extract, epimedium, and phosphatidylserine — designed to support a balanced and adaptive cortisol response.

The ingredients in Cortisol Manager may help promote relaxation and a sense of calm, aiding restful sleep while also working to stabilize cortisol levels and support a healthy stress response. Notably, Cortisol Manager is melatonin-free, making it a distinctive option for individuals seeking nighttime relaxation support without melatonin.

Each bottle contains 30 tablets. The product is vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free.

How It Works

How Cortisol Manager Supports Stress Balance and Sleep

Cortisol Manager by Integrative Therapeutics takes a multi-pathway approach to stress and relaxation. Its ingredients work through complementary mechanisms that target the body's stress-response systems and promote a state of calm conducive to restful sleep.

HPA Axis Modulation: The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis is a main regulator of the body's stress response. Sensoril® Ashwagandha and Magnolia bark extract both contain bioactive compounds that research suggests may help modulate this axis, supporting balanced cortisol output throughout the day and into the evening.

GABAergic Support: Multiple ingredients in Cortisol Manager interact with GABA, the brain's primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. Ashwagandha extracts have been shown to produce GABA-like activity, honokiol from Magnolia bark acts as a positive allosteric modulator at GABA-A receptors, and L-theanine has been reported to enhance GABAergic activity and stimulate GABA production. Together, these pathways may promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

Alpha-Wave Promotion: L-theanine has been reported to stimulate alpha brain waves — the brain wave pattern associated with a state of relaxed wakefulness and mental alertness. This supports the transition from a stressed state to a calm one without causing sedation.

Cortisol Stabilization: Research suggests that Ashwagandha supplementation may lower morning cortisol levels, a recognized biomarker of chronic stress, while Magnolia bark extract has demonstrated cortisol-reducing effects in human trials using a Magnolia/phellodendron blend.

Key Ingredients

Ashwagandha (withania somnifera) (Sensoril brand) (root, leaf) extract — 500 mg
Sensoril® Ashwagandha uses both root and leaf extract, standardized to 10% withanolides, and is considered the more calming form of Ashwagandha. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years as a Rasayana (rejuvenating tonic) for stress and exhaustion. Research suggests Ashwagandha modulates the HPA axis and exhibits GABAergic activity. A 2024 meta-analysis of 9 RCTs (558 patients) showed significant reductions on the Hamilton Anxiety Scale, Perceived Stress Scale, and serum cortisol levels compared to placebo. A more recent 2025 meta-analysis of 15 RCTs (873 patients) further corroborated significant reductions in anxiety and cortisol. For sleep, a PLOS ONE meta-analysis of 5 RCTs (400 participants) found a small but significant effect on overall sleep quality (SMD −0.59), with effects more prominent at doses ≥600 mg/day and treatment durations ≥8 weeks. A systematic review demonstrated that 250–500 mg daily for 4 to 13 weeks significantly decreased morning cortisol levels in adults with higher stress. Sensoril at 125–250 mg twice daily has been used in clinical trials for stress, anxiety, and postmenopausal support.
L-theanine — 500 mg
L-theanine is a non-protein amino acid found naturally in tea (Camellia sinensis) that crosses the blood-brain barrier and promotes alpha brain wave activity associated with calm alertness without sedation. It modulates multiple neurotransmitter systems — enhancing GABA, serotonin, and dopamine while inhibiting excitatory glutamate activity. A 2019 systematic review found that 200–400 mg/day reduced stress and anxiety in people under acute stress conditions. A 4-week randomized, placebo-controlled crossover trial (200 mg/day, n=30) showed significant reductions in trait anxiety, depression scale scores, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores, including improvements in sleep latency and sleep disturbance. A systematic review and meta-analysis of 19 articles (897 participants) found L-theanine significantly improved subjective sleep onset latency, daytime dysfunction, and overall sleep quality scores, though objective sleep measures did not reach significance. A single dose study showed significantly increased frontal alpha brain wave power, reduced salivary cortisol, and reduced state anxiety compared to placebo in response to an acute stress challenge.
Magnolia (Magnolia officinalis) (bark) extract standardized to 2% honokiol (6 mg) and 1% magnolol (3 mg) — 450 mg
Magnolia bark extract has been used in traditional Asian medicine for over 1,000 years. Its primary bioactive neolignans — honokiol and magnolol — readily cross the blood-brain barrier. Research has shown that honokiol acts as a positive allosteric modulator at the benzodiazepine binding site on GABA-A receptors, providing anxiolytic effects without the dependency risks associated with benzodiazepine drugs. In animal studies, the benzodiazepine-blocking drug flumazenil reversed magnolol's effects, confirming that it works through this receptor pathway. A double-blind, placebo-controlled human trial (n=56) using a Magnolia-containing blend showed significantly reduced salivary cortisol, perceived stress, tension, and anger in moderately stressed adults. In a pilot trial, the blend reduced transitory state anxiety scores. A randomized, multicenter study of 634 menopausal women found that a formula including Magnolia bark extract showed greater improvements in insomnia, irritability, and anxiety compared to the control group. Magnolia bark also demonstrates interactions with serotonin receptors and the dopamine transporter, consistent with its traditional calming and sleep-supporting uses.
epimedium (epimedium spp.) (aerial parts) extract — 450 mg
Epimedium is a genus of herbaceous flowering plants in the Berberidaceae family that have been widely used as a tonic in China, Japan, and Korea for more than 2,000 years. The aerial parts contain over 260 identified compounds, with prenylated flavonoids — particularly icariin — as the primary bioactive constituents. Epimedium has traditionally been used in Chinese medicine for fatigue, neurasthenia, and as a general tonic. Its pharmacological actions include immunomodulatory, antioxidant, and anti-aging properties according to modern pharmacology studies. Additionally, icariin and its metabolites exhibit phytoestrogenic activity and may support hormonal balance. The classic Chinese medicine text Shen Nong's Materia Medica recorded that Herba Epimedii has effects of 'tonifying kidney yang' and 'strengthening muscles and bones.' While human clinical evidence exists primarily in the area of bone health in postmenopausal women, its traditional role as a restorative tonic underpins its inclusion in adaptogenic formulations.
phosphatidylserine (from soybean Lecithin) — 100 mg
Phosphatidylserine is a phospholipid that is a structural and functional component of cell membranes throughout the body, including neurons. It belongs to the glycerophospholipid family found in Lecithin. Phosphatidylserine plays an important role in normal cellular metabolism, including regulation of membrane permeability and intracellular signaling processes. In the context of stress support, phosphatidylserine is involved in the membrane structure of cells in the nervous and endocrine systems. Lecithins, including their phosphatidylserine component, are amphiphilic substances found in both animal and plant tissues. The phosphatidylserine in Cortisol Manager is derived from soybean Lecithin.
