How it works
MegaGuard is a three-ingredient botanical capsule designed to support comprehensive upper GI function. It is intended for adults and children ages 8 and older who experience occasional gas, bloating, indigestion, or early satiety, and for those whose practitioners have identified concerns related to stomach acid balance or H. pylori. Each capsule provides artichoke leaf extract (320 mg), GutGard® deglycyrrhizinated licorice root (75 mg), and ginger root extract standardized to 20% gingerols (30 mg), taken with lunch and dinner.
What distinguishes the licorice component is the use of GutGard® rather than a standard DGL extract. Conventional DGL removes glycyrrhizin — the saponin associated with blood pressure and potassium concerns at high doses — but also strips out much of the flavonoid content. GutGard® uses a different manufacturing process that retains over 50 identified flavonoid compounds while keeping glycyrrhizin below 0.5%, resulting in a licorice extract with meaningfully broader activity for digestive support than standard DGL. The ginger extract is similarly differentiated by its gingerol standardization: most commercial ginger supplements contain around 5% gingerols, while MegaGuard's extract is standardized to 20%, delivering a higher concentration of the active polyphenolic compounds responsible for ginger's effects on gastric motility and nausea.
The three botanical components work through complementary mechanisms. GutGard® licorice flavonoids have been studied for their role in supporting the gastric mucosal lining and maintaining healthy H. pylori populations — the gram-negative bacterium whose overgrowth is associated with gastric discomfort and ulceration. Artichoke leaf extract (Cynara scolymus) contains bitter compounds that stimulate bile production and flow, supporting fat digestion and healthy liver function; a 2003 study found 640 mg per day of artichoke leaf extract provided meaningful digestive support for bloating and postprandial fullness, with results appearing within the first week for most participants. Ginger's gingerols and shogaols support gastric emptying and can temporarily ease nausea by weakly modulating cholinergic and serotonergic receptors. A published Italian trial of 126 patients found that the combination of ginger and artichoke leaf extracts reduced the frequency of common upper GI symptoms — including nausea, bloating, and abdominal discomfort — approximately 17% more effectively than artichoke extract alone, supporting the rationale for this specific ingredient combination.
