PyloGuard

PyloGuard is a single-ingredient capsule containing patented Lactobacillus reuteri DSM17648 (Pylopass®), formulated to support healthy Helicobacter pylori levels in the gastric environment. It is intended for adults and children ages 9 and older, and is appropriate for use as a standalone daily supplement or in conjunction with antibiotic eradication therapy under practitioner guidance. One capsule per day is the recommended dose. The formula is GMO-free, lactose-free, fructose-free, and stable at room temperature without refrigeration.

The mechanism of this formula is meaningfully different from that of conventional probiotic products, and the distinction matters for understanding how it works. PyloGuard does not contain live bacteria — the L. reuteri DSM17648 cells are inactivated through a low-temperature fermentation and drying process that preserves their surface structures without denaturing them. This is clinically significant because the mechanism of action does not depend on colonization or live culture activity. Instead, the surface of the inactivated bacterial cells acts as a co-aggregation site that selectively binds to H. pylori in the gastric lumen. The co-aggregated complex — pathogen bound to inactivated L. reuteri cells — is then eliminated through normal intestinal transit. In vitro research confirms that DSM17648 co-aggregates specifically with H. pylori without binding to commensal gut bacteria, meaning the product does not disrupt the broader microbiome in the process.

H. pylori is a gram-negative, spiral-shaped bacterium that colonizes the gastric mucosa and is estimated to be present in up to 50% of the global population. It survives the acidic stomach environment by producing urease, an enzyme that converts urea to ammonia, which buffers gastric acid and creates a more hospitable local pH for colonization. When H. pylori populations exceed a healthy range, they are associated with upper GI symptoms including nausea, heartburn, loss of appetite, and dyspepsia. Multiple published clinical trials using Pylopass® have demonstrated support for maintaining healthy H. pylori levels, with one placebo-controlled study in 200 participants showing significant reduction in gastrointestinal symptom scores and promoted abundance of beneficial commensal species including Faecalibacterium and Subdoligranulum. A separate interventional randomized study reported an 86% H. pylori eradication rate in the Pylopass® group — a 20% improvement over standard antibiotic therapy alone — supporting its use as a complementary strategy in practitioner-directed eradication protocols.
