What Does Zinc Do for Men? Benefits & Science
Discover what Zinc does for men — from testosterone and prostate support to immune defense and fertility. Learn how this essential mineral supports men's health.
What Does Zinc Do for Men?
Zinc is one of 16 essential trace minerals your body needs for optimal health. Next to iron, it is the most abundant mineral in your body and is found in almost every cell. Zinc is central to the proper functioning of more than 300 enzymes and is essential for proper growth and development.
But what does Zinc do for men specifically? The answer spans several critical areas of male health — from testosterone production and prostate function to fertility, immune defense, and beyond. Zinc is incorporated into about 10% of all human proteins, meaning its influence reaches virtually every system in the body. For men in particular, Zinc plays direct and well-studied roles in reproductive health, hormonal balance, and immune resilience.
Low levels of Zinc have been detected in people with a number of conditions including diabetes, male infertility, and osteoporosis. The hormone testosterone requires Zinc for its production, and symptoms resulting from an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) may also be relieved with additional Zinc.
How Zinc Supports Testosterone, Prostate, and Fertility
Understanding what does Zinc do for men starts with three interconnected pillars: testosterone, prostate health, and fertility.
Testosterone Production
Zinc deficiency is consistently linked to reduced testosterone levels in men. In adult men with Zinc deficiency, it causes hypogonadism, where the testes produce less testosterone. This effect happens at the testicular level — meaning the signaling from the pituitary gland may be normal, but the testes simply cannot respond properly without adequate Zinc. Research confirms that Zinc supplementation in deficient individuals has been shown to restore testosterone to normal levels. Zinc plays essential roles in LH receptor function and testosterone biosynthesis in Leydig cells, where Zinc transporter proteins (ZnT7, ZnT8) are required for intracellular Zinc delivery to support steroidogenic enzymes.
Prostate Health
The healthy prostate accumulates the highest concentration of Zinc of any soft tissue in the body. Studies show that BPH and prostate cancer tissue have significantly lower Zinc levels than normal tissue. Zinc regulates Zinc transporters (ZIP1) and supports apoptosis in prostate cells. A 2019 nutraceutical review cited Zinc as capable of producing similar benefits to lycopene on BPH symptoms, and Zinc is included in recognized BPH phytotherapy formulations alongside beta-sitosterol and selenium. Supplemental Zinc has been found in clinical practice to support urine flow and reduce residual volume in men with BPH.
Male Fertility and Sperm Health
Zinc is the most extensively studied micronutrient for male fertility. Seminal Zinc levels are significantly lower in infertile men, and a meta-analysis in Scientific Reports found Zinc supplementation significantly improved semen volume, sperm motility, and normal morphology in infertile males. It plays direct roles in spermatogenesis, sperm chromatin stability, capacitation, and testosterone balance. A 2020 large NIH-funded RCT found no improvement in live birth rates with combined Zinc and folic acid, indicating benefits may be specific to Zinc-deficient men.
Zinc's Role in Immune Function and Recovery
Beyond reproductive health, one of Zinc's prime uses comes in supporting the immune system. People who are deficient in Zinc are more susceptible to infections. Virtually all aspects of innate and adaptive immunity are affected by Zinc status — from neutrophils and natural killer cells to T cells and B cells.
Zinc supplementation improves immune system function, helping protect against colds and upper respiratory illnesses. Multiple meta-analyses confirm that Zinc acetate and Zinc gluconate lozenges containing more than 75 mg/day of elemental Zinc shortened common cold duration on average by approximately 33%. A 2015 meta-analysis confirmed significant reductions in nasal discharge (34%), nasal congestion (37%), cough (46%), and hoarseness (43%) with Zinc lozenge use.
Zinc also supports anti-inflammatory activity. It inhibits NF-κB activation, suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α), and reduces oxidative stress markers such as CRP and MDA. Zinc negatively regulates gene expression of inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β, which are known to generate reactive oxygen species — this may be one mechanism by which Zinc functions as an antioxidant in humans.
For men recovering from illness, Zinc is essential for post-illness immune restoration. Clinical data also show that Zinc supplementation may reduce viral load and support recovery in post-viral inflammatory states.
Why the Form of Zinc Matters: OptiZinc®
Not all Zinc supplements are created equal. This product uses OptiZinc®, the only premium Zinc supplement approved by the FDA for human nutrition. OptiZinc® is a patented 1:1 complex of Zinc and 100% natural methionine — the amino acid that is best absorbed by the body — and serves as an antioxidant.
Studies show that OptiZinc® is absorbed better, retained longer, and is more effective than ordinary Zinc supplements tested. It also resists binding with dietary fiber and phytate — organic compounds that inhibit Zinc absorption. This is particularly important because phytic acid, found in many plant foods, can significantly reduce Zinc bioavailability. Unlike other Zinc supplements, OptiZinc® will not cause anemia by removing iron from cells.
The product is free from gluten, dairy, soy, and grains, making it suitable for men with common dietary sensitivities.

Who Should Consider Zinc Supplementation?
While Zinc is essential for everyone, certain men may benefit most from supplementation. Men concerned about prostate health, testosterone levels, or fertility may find Zinc particularly relevant, as research suggests these areas are directly influenced by Zinc status.
Individuals who have had gastrointestinal surgery such as weight loss surgery, or who have digestive disorders such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, may have difficulty absorbing adequate Zinc. Vegetarians may also need up to 50% more Zinc than non-vegetarians, because phytic acid in plant-based diets reduces Zinc absorption. Studies show that 35%–45% of adults aged 60 years or older had Zinc intakes below the estimated average requirement.
Men facing surgery are encouraged to take sufficient Zinc, vitamin A, and vitamin C before and after surgery, as studies show these nutrients may support wound healing. Men looking for immune support — particularly during cold and flu season — may also benefit, given Zinc's well-documented role in shortening the duration of upper respiratory symptoms.
How to Take
Take one (1) tablet daily with meals. Store in a cool, dry place and away from direct light. Each tablet contains 20 mg of OptiZinc®. The Recommended Dietary Allowance for adult men is 11 mg/day, and the Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 40 mg/day.

Does Zinc interact with any medications?
Zinc may interact with certain medications. Both quinolone antibiotics (such as Cipro) and tetracycline antibiotics might reduce absorption of both Zinc and the antibiotic — take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before, or 4 to 6 hours after, taking a Zinc supplement. Penicillamine should be taken at least 1 hour apart from Zinc. Thiazide diuretics increase urinary Zinc excretion by as much as 60%, and taking iron supplements (≥25 mg) at the same time as Zinc can reduce Zinc absorption.
