The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 40 mg/day. Doses of 50 mg or more over a period of weeks can inhibit copper absorption, reduce immune function, and lower HDL cholesterol levels. Zinc may interact with quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics — take the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after taking Zinc. Zinc can also reduce absorption of penicillamine; separate doses by at least 1 hour. Iron supplements (≥25 mg) taken simultaneously can reduce Zinc absorption.
