California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica): A Comprehensive Reference
1. Identity and Botanical Classification
California poppy, or golden poppy (Eschscholzia californica), is the iconic state flower of California, with a native range from Northern California to Southwestern Mexico. It is a wild annual or perennial of the poppy family, with finely dissected leaves and cup-shaped golden flowers. Its botanical family is Papaveraceae. The botanical name honors Dr. Johann Friedrich Eschscholtz, a surgeon and naturalist on a Russian expedition to circumnavigate the globe in 1815.
The plant grows well as an ornamental in Mediterranean climates, but may be invasive in many parts of the world. In addition to its native range, California poppy has been introduced in regions including parts of the eastern United States, Central America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand. California poppy has a short-lived life cycle but can be maintained as a perennial.
California poppies (Eschscholzia californica) are completely different from opium poppies (Papaver somniferum). While both are in the poppy family (Papaveraceae), they are separate genera with very different chemistry. California poppy contains its own unique alkaloids, but none of them are opiates.
Parts Used
The parts used medicinally are the aerial parts of the plant. The bright orange roots contain up to three times the active compounds found in the foliage, but all parts of the plant are used medicinally. The aerial parts — leaves, stems, and flowers — contain the primary medicinal constituents and are typically harvested during flowering, then dried for tea or tincture preparation.
Common Forms and Preparations
California poppy can be purchased as capsules, tablets, loose leaves for tea, and an extract. Extracts are usually more concentrated than capsules and tablets and can contain alcohol (45–70%). California poppy is best used fresh as opposed to dried herb form to maximize the benefits from its constituents. It may also be tinctured from the fresh herb as long as the alcohol percentage is high enough to account for the water content. Preparations made from the fresh plant material are considered more potent, whether used as a tea or tincture.
2. Traditional and Historical Use
Native American Uses
California poppy was highly prized by Native Americans for its medicinal value, mainly due to its various specialized metabolites, especially benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs). It was used by Native Americans as a food — the whole plant was cooked and eaten as a vegetable — and as a medicine in various preparations for both children and adults. Tribes from different parts of California used the plant in various ways and for a variety of conditions.
The Mendocino used a root preparation applied to a painful tooth, taken for stomach aches, or applied as a wash for headaches. The Costanoan tribes used a decoction of the flowers to promote healthy sleep and as a preparation to be rubbed into hair to kill lice. The Pomo, Mendocino, Yuki, and Kashaya peoples used it to halt lactation. The juice from the root or mashed seedpods was applied topically to the breasts to discourage infants from suckling, which in turn would reduce milk supply. The root was also traditionally used as a sedative for insomnia and as an analgesic for a variety of ailments, including muscle pain, headaches, toothaches, and injuries.
California poppy is a native American remedy that was used to help soothe fussy babies and promote a calm and healing sleep for their parents. The Pomo tribes from areas north of what is now Sacramento reportedly used the crushed seeds as a topical application, while the Mendocino used a root preparation as an external cleansing agent and internally.
European Contact and Subsequent Western Herbal Traditions
Docked for a time in San Francisco, Eschscholtz and fellow botanist Adelbert von Chamisso took to the countryside and found a golden-colored poppy, already being utilized by the natives as a sedative. The first Spaniards to arrive in California noticed local Native American Nations using the herb as a sedative for children. They also crushed the entire plant into a compress as a topical vulnerary and used the root for various pains.
In 1890, California poppy was included in the Parke-Davis catalog, in which it was referred to as an "excellent soporific (sleep-inducing) and analgesic, above all harmless." The US Formulary of 1918 says of this botanical: "Attention has been brought to this California member of the Papaveraceae, as a powerful herb for calming and supporting sleep." It is commonly used in Europe as a relaxant and antispasmodic.
California poppy has a long tradition of use in Western herbal medicine for calming the nervous system and has been used for states of unrest such as insomnia, nervous agitation, and mild to moderate pain. It can be used for any such presentations in children, including over-excitability.
3. Key Constituents and Phytochemistry
Alkaloids
The California poppy (Eschscholzia californica Cham.) contains a variety of natural compounds including several alkaloids found exclusively in this plant. Pharmacologically relevant constituents include the main alkaloids californidine, escholtzine, and protopine. Californidine is the most abundant, followed by escholtzine.
A comprehensive chromatographic analysis identified a broader alkaloid profile. Peak identification in LC-UV chromatography found: reticuline, caryachine, N-methyllaurotetanine, protopine, californidine, allocryptopine, escholtzine, sanguinarine, and chelerythrine. Isolation procedures have also yielded known alkaloids californidine, escholtzine, N-methyllaurotetanine, caryachine, and O-methylcaryachine, along with novel pavine alkaloids.
Additional isoquinoline alkaloids identified in the plant include sanguinarine, chelirubine, macarpine, chelerythrine, protopine, eschscholtzine, allocryptopine, (S)-reticuline, and N-methyllaurotetanine.
Flavonoids and Other Compounds
Six flavonol 3-O-glycosides were isolated from the aerial parts of Eschscholzia californica. Flavonoids in the plant occurred mainly as quercetin isorhamnetine glycosides. The plant also contains a variety of pigments including orange, red, and yellow due to its different carotenoid composition.
Alkaloid Content in Commercial Products
A 2023 analytical study by researchers at the University of Basel and ETH Zurich quantified alkaloid content in eight commercial California poppy products. Contents of californidine, escholtzine, and protopine were in the ranges of 0.13–2.55, 0.05–0.63, and 0.008–0.200 mg/g, respectively. Contents in alkaloids differed strongly between the products of California poppy examined.
4. Mechanisms of Action
GABAergic Modulation
Alkaloids detected in E. californica could be hypothesized to act at GABAA receptors, which are widely expressed in the brain mainly at inhibitory interneurons. Electrophysiological studies on a recombinant α1β2γ2 GABAA receptor showed no effect of N-methyllaurotetanine at concentrations lower than 30 μM. However, (S)-reticuline behaved as a positive allosteric modulator at the α3, α5, and α6 isoforms of GABAA receptors. The depressant properties of aerial parts of E. californica are assigned to chloride-current modulation by (S)-reticuline at the α3β2γ2 and α5β2γ2 GABAA receptors.
Sedative, anxiolytic, and antinociceptive effects have been traditionally assigned to protopine and allocryptopine. Both alkaloids act as weak stimulators of the binding of GABAA receptor agonists in the rat brain, as anti-inflammatory agents, and as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors.
Serotonin Receptor Binding
A 70% ethanol extract of California poppy was able to bind to 5-HT1A and 5-HT7 receptors at 100 μg/mL. Another aporphine alkaloid isolated from this plant, N-methyllaurotetanine (NMT), was reported to act as an antagonist at the serotonin 5-HT1AR receptor (EC50 = 155 nM, Ki = 85 nM).
Catecholamine and Acetylcholinesterase Activity
Various forms of reticuline have been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase in human blood, whereas other forms bind serotonin 5-HT(1A) and 5-HT(7) receptors at 100 µg/mL, which may contribute to anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. Reported pharmacological activities also include modulation of catecholamine metabolism.
Antidepressant-Related Activity
Protopine has been reported to inhibit serotonin transporter and noradrenaline transporter and to have antidepressant-like effects in mice models. In silico studies demonstrated that protopine, rutin, eschscholtzidine, boldine, and (S)-scoulerine exhibited notable inhibitory effects on insomnia-related DRD5, DRD4, and SERT proteins.
Bioavailability
In the Caco-2 cell model, californidine was low-to-moderately permeable while escholtzine and protopine were highly permeable. An active transport process was potentially involved in the transfer of the three alkaloids. Protopine was found to have an absolute bioavailability of 25.8% in rats and to undergo phase I/II metabolism. In addition, excretion studies in rats have shown that protopine was mainly excreted in metabolized form (>99%). The three compounds were not metabolized by the artificial gut microbiota over 24 hours, nor did the California poppy extract or the alkaloids markedly impact microbial SCFA production and bacterial viability.
5. Scientific Evidence by Area of Use
5.1 Anxiety
Animal Studies: Eschscholzia californica has demonstrated anxiolytic effects in mice, where doses of more than 25 mg/kg demonstrated anxiolytic effects and 200 mg/kg promoted sedation. Two animal studies examined the sedative and anxiolytic properties of California poppy, concluding that this medicinal herb has strong anti-anxiety and sleep-promoting effects.
Human/Clinical Evidence: In a double-blind, randomized controlled trial, a combination of California poppy, hawthorn (Crataegus oxycantha), and magnesium were compared to placebo to evaluate safety and efficacy on mild to moderate anxiety disorders. The trial was conducted among 264 adults diagnosed with mild-to-moderate generalized anxiety. Participants were divided into two groups, with one group (n=130) receiving the herbal extract and the other (n=134) receiving placebo. This fixed combination was more effective than placebo on Hamilton Anxiety scores over 3 months.
Because the product contained multiple active ingredients, it is difficult to isolate exactly how much of the effect came from the poppy itself. Standalone human trials with California poppy extract alone are still lacking, so the strength of evidence is much weaker than what exists for well-studied herbs like valerian or passionflower.
Evidence strength: Preliminary. The sole double-blind RCT used a multi-ingredient preparation. Single-herb human evidence for anxiety is absent.
5.2 Sleep and Insomnia
An open-label, observational, longitudinal study was carried out in a French primary care setting to assess the effect of a supplement containing Eschscholzia californica and Valeriana officinalis on individuals with insomnia. Thirty-six patients were included in the study and were instructed to take up to four tablets per night over the course of four weeks. Each tablet contained 80 mg of Eschscholzia californica and 32 mg Valeriana officinalis root extract. Results showed that after one month, insomnia severity was reduced (p<0.0001), sleep duration had increased by 0.5 hours (p=0.002), and waking in the night was also reduced. Anxiety scores were also improved (p<0.0001).
This is a promising study for the use of California poppy in the treatment of anxiety and insomnia; however, more robust studies with a control group are warranted to further explore this herb.
An open-label clinical trial was performed to obtain preliminary safety and efficacy information of California poppy. This trial was approved by a central ethics review board. The study results showed that California poppy can be used as a co-analgesic to provide additional analgesia and/or sleep improvement to the patient.
Evidence strength: Weak to preliminary. Studies involve small sample sizes, lack placebo controls (open-label design), and use combination formulas rather than single-herb preparations, making attribution of specific effects to California poppy alone impossible.
5.3 Pain and Analgesia
The root contains a variety of nonnarcotic alkaloids that have been shown to relax smooth muscle, especially in the uterus and bronchial airways, treating menstrual cramps and spasmodic coughs.
An animal study examined the pain-relieving effects of Eschscholzia californica extract. The findings reported that California poppy may be an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain such as sciatic nerve pain and osteoarthritis. An open-label trial of two studies was conducted on the analgesic effects of California poppy's alkaloids (including protopine, californidine, escholtzine, and sanguinarine). Results revealed that the plant has a strong pain management effect for chronic pain and for pain-related insomnia.
A product containing 3 grams of the dried herb standardized to contain 0.8% isoquinoline alkaloids (californidine, escholtzine, and protopine) is authorized by Health Canada for use as an analgesic and mild sedative (hypnotic) to be used in the management of chronic pain.
Human studies specifically measuring California poppy's painkilling effects are essentially nonexistent at this point, so this use rests almost entirely on traditional practice rather than clinical data.
Evidence strength: Very limited for humans. Animal and open-label data are suggestive; no placebo-controlled human RCTs on pain alone have been published.
5.4 Antimicrobial Activity
Reference strains of microorganisms sensitive to California poppy extracts include Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Proteus vulgaris, Bacillus subtilis, and Candida albicans; among clinical strains — Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans. The screening for antimicrobial activity of Eschscholzia californica showed its presence in the herb of the plant under study.
Evidence strength: Preclinical only (in vitro screening). No human data.
6. Body Systems and Health Areas Associated with California Poppy
- Central Nervous System (CNS): Phytomedicines containing California poppy are widely used for the treatment of nervousness, anxiety, and sleeping disorders. Reported pharmacological activities include modulation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptor activity, serotonin receptor binding, and modulation of catecholamine metabolism.
- Sleep: Because of the sedative, anxiolytic, and analgesic effects, this herb is currently sold in pharmacies in many countries.
- Musculoskeletal / Pain: The root contains nonnarcotic alkaloids that have been shown to relax smooth muscle, especially in the uterus and bronchial airways.
- Mood / Neurochemistry: An extract of California poppy was able to bind to certain serotonin receptors, and one of its active components, protopine, has antidepressant-like effects in animal models.
- Antimicrobial (topical/in vitro): California poppy also has medicinal uses when applied topically. It has demonstrated antibacterial properties, making it useful for treating cuts, scrapes, and other bacterial skin conditions.
7. Dosage Forms and Reported Dosages
California poppy is available in tablets, capsules, tea, and tinctures. The following dosages have been reported in published sources and studies:
- Extract (clinical study): Each tablet in the insomnia study contained 80 mg of Eschscholzia californica and 32 mg of Valeriana officinalis root extract; patients took up to four tablets per night over four weeks.
- Extract (National Capital Poison Center reference dose): A usual adult dose of the extract is 40 mg twice a day to treat anxiety.
- Tea: The usual dose when used as a tea is 2–3.5 g up to four times a day.
- Tincture (1:10, 45%): 2–4 ml three times daily. Drop doses can also be given.
- Fluid extract (1:1, 25%): 1–2 ml three times daily.
- Infusion/decoction: 2–4 g up to three times daily.
- Dried powder (general safe range per Restorative Medicine monograph): Dried powder of the seed pods, aerial parts, or whole plant is generally considered safe at doses of 500 mg–2 g/day. Smaller amounts if combined in a formula with herbs of similar activity (e.g., other sedatives).
- Standardized extract (Health Canada authorized product): A product containing 3 grams of the dried herb standardized to 0.8% isoquinoline alkaloids (californidine, escholtzine, and protopine) is authorized by Health Canada for use as an analgesic and mild sedative.
- Animal study dose extrapolation: Dosages calculated from animal studies suggest that 1.5–6 g for a 60 kg adult in humans is required for a sedative effect, whilst dosages of between 25–200 mg/kg are associated with a more gentle anxiolytic effect.
There are no universally agreed-upon dosages because the plant has not gone through the kind of regulatory approval process that establishes standard recommendations. The clinical studies that do exist used specific extract formulations, but products on the market vary widely in concentration and potency.
8. Safety Considerations and Drug Interactions
General Tolerability
Mild to moderate nausea is noted as the only commonly observed side effect. The safety class of 2b indicates this herb should not be used during pregnancy. The interaction class of A indicates that no clinically relevant adverse reactions are expected to occur when taken appropriately.
Pregnancy and Lactation
There are no published studies on E. californica in pregnancy or lactation; however, plants containing opiates, no matter how small the quantity, are probably best avoided by pregnant and nursing women. There is a lack of reliable information for the use of California poppy in pregnancy and lactation and, therefore, it should be avoided and only taken under the guidance of a medical herbalist.
CNS Depressants and Sedative Drugs
California poppy has additive effects when used in conjunction with central nervous system (CNS) depressants. California poppy is generally considered safe when used in recommended amounts, though it can cause drowsiness and should be avoided when operating heavy machinery or mixed with sedative drugs.
Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs)
Theoretical interaction concerns exist between California poppy alkaloids and monoamine oxidase inhibitors. While regarded as safe, California poppy may bind with the same receptors as those targeted by monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), potentially altering the impact of those medications.
CYP3A4 Enzyme Interactions
Theoretically, the alkaloids in California poppy may inhibit CYP3A4 enzymes; however, no interactions have yet been observed clinically and reported.
Psychiatric Medications
Use with caution in patients on psychiatric drugs.
Herb-Drug Interactions and Commercial Products
Previous studies have shown that these compounds could be involved in herb-drug interactions. Only limited information is available about the alkaloid content in commercial preparations and their intestinal absorption.
Distinction from Opium Poppy
Researchers believe the alkaloids in California poppy, mainly californidine and escholtzine, are behind the plant's medicinal properties. These alkaloids have been shown to interact with γ-Aminobutyric acid type A (GABAA) receptors, which are responsible for inhibiting synaptic transmission in the central nervous system. Despite the name similarity, the mechanism of action of California poppy is completely different from that of its cousin species, the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum). For this reason, it has a much smaller potential for toxicity or creating dependency.
9. Summary of Evidence Strength
Research indicates certain constituents may act as mild GABA-A receptor modulators, though the effects appear gentler than benzodiazepines or even stronger herbal sedatives. This mechanism aligns with traditional use for nervous tension and mild anxiety, though human trials specifically on single-herb California poppy remain limited.
While more comprehensive clinical trials are needed to fully elucidate the mechanisms of action, current findings support the role of California poppy's alkaloids in promoting relaxation and improving sleep quality through their interaction with the nervous system.
The most robust human evidence comes from studies using California poppy in combination with other herbs and nutrients. Because multi-ingredient preparations were used, these studies support the concept of gentle, plant-based anxiolysis but do not isolate California poppy's specific contribution. Quality control work demonstrates measurable alkaloid ranges in commercial products and good intestinal permeability for some constituents, strengthening the case for bioavailability.
