Sinopsis

Asimina triloba, comúnmente conocida como paw paw, es un pequeño árbol caducifolio nativo del este de los Estados Unidos. Produce una fruta grande, similar a una natilla, con un sabor tropical, a veces llamada "manzana de natilla americana." Si bien la fruta es nutricionalmente rica—contiene vitamina C, magnesio, hierro y antioxidantes—la corteza, las ramitas y las hojas del árbol han despertado interés por sus propiedades medicinales, particularmente por su potencial anticancerígeno.

Los compuestos más bioactivos del paw paw son las acetogeninas anonáceas, un grupo de derivados de ácidos grasos únicos de la familia Annonaceae. An open clinical study in 205 dyspeptic patients using gentian dry extract demonstrated a mean 68% symptom improvement rate across heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, loss of appetite, and flatulence. The mechanism is well-characterised: bitter receptor activation increases HCl, enzyme, and bile secretion.

The EMA's historical-use documentation lists diarrhea among traditional indications. No controlled clinical trials have been conducted to verify efficacy for this indication.

  • Reduction of fever is one of the oldest recorded uses of gentian root, cited in European herbal traditions as far back as Hildegard von Bingen (12th century) and in subsequent pharmacopeial historical records including the EMA assessment report. The antimalarial compound gentianine from gentian has antipyretic properties in some traditions. No clinical trials validate this use.

  • Gentian root (Gentiana lutea) is approved by Commission E and recognized by ESCOP for digestive and biliary complaints. Its intensely bitter iridoids (gentiopicrin, amarogentin) stimulate bile flow via the bitter reflex and are a standard component of traditional European choleretic biliary formulas spanning centuries.

In TCM, G. scabra and G. lutea are used for gastritis and gastric heat. An animal study showed gentian extract reduced gastric acid output and protected gut lining against ulcers. Gentian is contraindicated in severe gastritis or ulcers in modern guidance due to its acid-stimulating properties.

No clinical trials have evaluated gentian for wound healing in humans.
