Una vejiga ulcerada, frecuentemente asociada con cistitis intersticial (IC) o síndrome de vejiga dolorosa (PBS), es una afección crónica caracterizada por inflamación y ulceración del revestimiento de la vejiga. Esto resulta en dolor pélvico, urgencia urinaria, frecuencia, y a veces sangrado o lesiones de Hunner (úlceras vesicales específicas encontradas en un subgrupo de pacientes con IC). A diferencia de las infecciones del tracto urinario (UTIs), la IC no es causada por bacterias y no responde a los antibióticos.
La causa exacta de las úlceras vesicales es desconocida, pero puede involucrar disfunción inmunitaria, respuestas alérgicas, anomalías del sistema nervioso, o defectos del revestimiento vesical. La afección afecta principalmente a mujeres pero también puede ocurrir en hombres.
