Sinopsis

La lactoperoxidasa es una enzima que contiene hemo, presente de forma natural en la leche de mamíferos, la saliva, las lágrimas y otras secreciones mucosas. Desempeña un papel vital en el sistema inmunitario innato al catalizar la oxidación de iones tiocianato (SCN⁻) en presencia de peróxido de hidrógeno (H₂O₂), generando compuestos antimicrobianos como el hipotiocianito (OSCN⁻). Estas moléculas reactivas inhiben el crecimiento de bacterias, virus y hongos, especialmente en entornos mucosos.

En el cuerpo humano, la lactoperoxidasa forma parte de la primera línea de defensa en las superficies epiteliales, donde protege contra los patógenos sin depender de procesos inflamatorios.
