Sinopsis

La curcumina es el compuesto activo principal en la cúrcuma (Curcuma longa), un rizoma de color amarillo brillante de la familia del jengibre (Zingiberaceae). Es responsable del color distintivo de la cúrcuma y de gran parte de sus propiedades antiinflamatorias, antioxidantes y antimicrobianas. Clasificada químicamente como un polifenol, la curcumina ha sido ampliamente estudiada por sus efectos de amplio alcance sobre la inflamación crónica, la protección celular y la regulación metabólica.

La curcumina es más conocida por:

La curcumina tiene una biodisponibilidad natural deficiente debido a su metabolismo rápido y su escasa absorción. Sin embargo, actualmente se formula comúnmente con extracto de pimienta negra (piperina), fosfolípidos (como en Meriva®), o nanopartículas para mejorar su absorción y eficacia clínica.

Uso Histórico
La curcumina, como constituyente principal de la cúrcuma, ha sido utilizada durante más de 4,000 años en la medicina Ayurvédica, Siddha y China Tradicional. En el Ayurveda, la cúrcuma es conocida como Haridra y se clasifica como amarga, picante y calorífica, utilizada para equilibrar los doshas kapha y vata, y considerada una de las hierbas "rasayana" (rejuvenecedoras) más importantes.

La cúrcuma ha sido utilizada tradicionalmente para:
