Sinopsis

Multiple in vitro and in vivo studies have directly measured the antioxidant activity of broomrape (Orobanche spp.) extracts. Orobanche crenata and European broomrapes demonstrate substantial radical scavenging capacity, and phenylpropanoid glycosides are identified as the primary active compounds. In vivo rodent studies confirm improved antioxidant enzyme status in kidney and liver tissue.

  • Cistanche tubulosa (Orobanchaceae, also known as broomrape) has human clinical trial evidence for reducing fatigue symptoms. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 190 adults with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) showed significant improvement in fatigue scores and blood lactic acid levels with a Cistanche+ginkgo combination. Orobanche cumana in ancient Chinese use was also attributed antifatigue effects.

  • ApendicitisCientífico

Broomrape species (O. crenata, O. foetida) have been studied in rodent and in vitro models for anti-inflammatory activity. O. foetida aqueous extract downregulated TNF-α, IL-6, and NF-κB gene expression in a CCl4-induced liver injury rat model. The PPGs (acteoside, echinacoside) are considered the primary anti-inflammatory agents. Evidence is preclinical only.

  • Broomrape (Orobanchaceae family, including Cistanche tubulosa also known as broomrape) has preclinical scientific evidence supporting effects on sperm quality and male reproductive function. Animal studies demonstrate improved sperm count, motility, and testosterone via steroidogenic enzyme upregulation. The ethnopharmacological literature also documents longstanding traditional use of Orobanche spp. against spermatorrhea and infertility.

  • EscalofríosCientífico

Cistanche tubulosa glycosides (Orobanchaceae/broomrape family) have been investigated clinically for Alzheimer's disease. An open-label uncontrolled study in 18 AD patients found cognitive scores were largely stabilized over 48 weeks with Memoregain® (cistanche glycoside capsules), though changes were statistically insignificant. Preclinical data shows neuroprotective and memory-enhancing properties of phenylpropanoid glycosides.

  • Broomrape family plants (Cistanche tubulosa, Orobanchaceae) have animal-level evidence for stimulating testosterone biosynthesis through upregulation of steroidogenic enzymes in the testes. One human combination trial also found improved testosterone in male CFS subjects. The evidence for standalone testosterone elevation in humans remains preliminary.

  • Tibetan traditional medicine documents the use of broomrape topically for burns. This is recorded in classical Tibetan herbal literature and cited in ethnopharmacological compilations. No clinical or pharmacological studies specifically evaluating broomrape for burns exist.

  • ArtritisTradicional

Broomrape and its close relative Cistanche have a well-documented traditional use as mild laxatives in TCM and Western herbal traditions. The plant's gentle laxative effect on bowel movement is cited across multiple herbal systems and in classical Chinese pharmacopoeia entries.

  • Orobanche species have documented traditional use for infantile diarrhoea and bowel disorders across Asian medicinal traditions and among North American indigenous peoples. The plant's astringent properties have historically been cited as the pharmacological rationale.

  • Broomrape (Orobanche spp.) has a long-documented history of use as a remedy for impotence in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Tibetan medicine, and Western herbal traditions. The closely related Cistanche (also called broomrape in English, Orobanchaceae family) has preclinical animal evidence supporting its androgen-modulating effects. No controlled human trials specifically on erectile function exist for either Orobanche or Cistanche alone.

  • Tibetan medicine documents use of broomrape to stop excessive menstrual bleeding. This is cited in classical Tibetan herbal literature within the category of hemostatic applications. No pharmacological or clinical evidence exists for this indication.

  • Broomrape has been regarded as a male tonic and aphrodisiac in TCM, Tibetan, and Western herbal traditions. Orobanche cumana is specifically noted in ancient Chinese herbalism for an 'andrin-like action.' One human RCT with a Cistanche+ginkgo combination showed improved sexual life quality scores, but this cannot be attributed solely to broomrape/Cistanche.

  • SorderaTradicional

Broomrape has a documented traditional use applied topically for toothache in Tibetan medicine and is mentioned in Western herbal traditions. The evidence is ethnobotanical only, with no pharmacological studies or clinical trials.

  • DifteriaTradicional

Multiple traditional systems, including North American indigenous medicine, Chinese herbalism, and Tibetan medicine, have documented topical use of broomrape for wound healing and ulcers. The plant's astringent properties and antimicrobial compounds are cited as the underlying rationale.
