Sinopsis

El síndrome de fibromialgia (FMS) es una afección neurológica crónica caracterizada por dolor musculoesquelético generalizado, puntos sensibles, fatiga, alteraciones del sueño, y dificultades cognitivas frecuentemente descritas como "niebla fibrosa." Afecta a un estimado del 2–4% de la población, siendo las mujeres diagnosticadas con mucha mayor frecuencia que los hombres.

La causa exacta de la fibromialgia sigue siendo poco clara, pero se considera un trastorno del sistema nervioso central que involucra procesamiento anormal del dolor, mayor sensibilidad al dolor, y desequilibrios neuroquímicos—particularmente de serotonina, dopamina, y norepinefrina. Con frecuencia se desarrolla después de un trauma físico, una infección, estrés psicológico, u otra enfermedad. La genética y los factores ambientales también juegan un papel.
