Sinopsis
El citomegalovirus (CMV) es un virus común que pertenece a la familia de los herpesvirus y que infecta a personas de todas las edades. Una vez que una persona contrae el CMV, el virus permanece inactivo (latente) en el cuerpo de por vida y puede reactivarse si el sistema inmunitario se debilita.
En personas sanas, las infecciones por CMV suelen ser leves o asintomáticas, y se asemejan a un resfriado leve o a una mononucleosis. Sin embargo, en recién nacidos (CMV congénito), mujeres embarazadas, receptores de trasplante de órganos e individuos inmunocomprometidos (como aquellos con HIV/AIDS o que se someten a quimioterapia), el CMV puede causar complicaciones graves que afectan el cerebro, el hÃgado, los pulmones, los ojos (retinitis) y el sistema digestivo.
Tipos de infección por CMV:
