Sinopsis
La depresión es una afección de salud mental común y grave caracterizada por tristeza persistente, desesperanza, energía baja, y pérdida de interés o placer en actividades que antes se disfrutaban. Afecta cómo una persona se siente, piensa y funciona diariamente—interfiriendo con el sueño, el apetito, la concentración, el trabajo y las relaciones. A diferencia de la tristeza temporal, la depresión es crónica y frecuentemente recurrente, con raíces biológicas, psicológicas y ambientales.
La afección varía en intensidad, de leve a grave, y puede ser episódica o a largo plazo. La depresión frecuentemente es desencadenada o agravada por eventos de vida estresantes, trauma, enfermedad crónica, cambios hormonales, o desequilibrios neuroquímicos. Puede ocurrir por sí sola o junto con otras afecciones como ansiedad, trastorno por uso de sustancias o dolor crónico.
