Disentería
Sinopsis
La disentería es una infección intestinal caracterizada por diarrea severa con sangre y mucosidad en las heces, frecuentemente acompañada de calambres abdominales, fiebre y deshidratación. Es causada principalmente por dos agentes: bacterias Shigella (disentería bacilar) y parásitos Entamoeba histolytica (disentería amebiana). La disentería bacilar es más común en áreas desarrolladas, mientras que la disentería amebiana se asocia frecuentemente con saneamiento deficiente y climas tropicales.
La transmisión ocurre típicamente a través de la ruta fecal-oral—alimentos, agua o superficies contaminadas—lo que hace que los brotes sean más comunes en entornos superpoblados o insalubres. Una vez ingeridos, estos patógenos invaden el revestimiento intestinal, desencadenando inflamación y daño que conducen a heces dolorosas y con sangre y urgencias frecuentes de defecar.
Las complicaciones pueden incluir deshidratación, desnutrición, ulceración del colon y, en casos raros, infección sistémica o abscesos hepáticos (especialmente en la disentería amebiana).
